Classic of Mountains and Seas: The Card Game is adapted from the Ming Dynasty card game Madiao Pai. Madiao Pai consists of 40 cards. Each player draws eight cards initially, while the remaining eight are placed face down in the center on the board. The game is divided into two stages: playing cards to take tricks and entering the scoring phase. The name Madiao derives from Ma (horse), referring to betting chips, and Diao (to settle), meaning the resolution of bets—hence the combination Madiao. Madiao Pai significantly influenced modern boardgames like Mahjong.

In Classic of Mountains and Seas: The Card Game, you take on the role of an ancient clan leader, guiding your tribe to survive and thrive in the fantastical world depicted in the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Through strategic cardplay, you will gather vital resources—Water, Copper, and Grain—essential for your clan's sustenance, while also enduring unavoidable Damage. At the same time, you can seek blessings from six types of deities: Clan Spirits, Nature Gods, Malevolent Beasts, Auspicious Beasts, Legends, and the Sun & Moon. At the end of the game, the leader who has guided their clan to achieve the highest score will claim ultimate victory!
